A Castle in Chianti for Your Wedding in Tuscany!

The castle is located 168 meters above sea level on the top of a cone- shaped hill that dominates the Chiantigiana road. It was built in the year 980 for defensive purposes by the powerful Gherardini family and between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries was object of harsh disputes between the factions of the Guelphs and Ghibellines first and then among those even more violent between the White and Black Guelphs. The toponym comes from a contraction of the name “Monte Acuto”. The oldest nucleus of the castle is the high thirteenth-century tower, still existing in the center of the property, surrounded by a kind of rustic keep, with stone parameter exposed.

Already owned by the Adimari family, around 1550 the building was enlarged and transformed into a suburban villa for the Florentine merchant Bastiano Ciaini, who also owned the front Villa il Cerretino and who hired one of the most famous architects at that time, Domenico Di Faccio d’Agnolo. At that time also date the numerous grotesque decorations of the interior and the loggetta on the south side, while the northern one has a more sober Florentine style, with columns and a serliana edged in pietra serena. The owner, who soon became called “di Montaguto”, suffered a financial collapse and a few years later the complex was bought by the Niccolini family.
